LRFA Artists at Park House

Gavin Rain, born in Cape Town, South Africa. Having studied Art and Neuropsychology at the University of Cape Town in the 1980s and '90s, Gavin Rain has developed an artist style and technique which was influenced by the pointillism of Georges Seurat and the Russian avant-garde artists of the 1900s. Gavin's use of abstracted concentric circles, which when viewed up-close appear as dense three-dimensional relief dots, balance and pull into focus when viewed from a distance where the figurative image is defined by the sum of these same dots as the viewer takes a few steps back. The transition is quite mesmerizing.

Paul Rousso creates works that embody discernible items from consumer goods to mainstream media on an exaggerated scale, underscoring those on the verge of obsoletion such as paper currency, print advertising, newspapers, and magazines. Using heat infusion on acrylic, Rousso molds his subject matter into dynamic sculptures, mixing the opposing worlds of the flat and dimensional, thereby giving these objects new life. With influences ranging from the New York Times to Campbell's Soup Can, he explores the theoretical limits of art and art history, converging traditional and modern textures, yet highlighting their unrelenting divergence in meaning.

Carly Allen Martin's work is a celebration of color as a primary means of emotional expression. Known for her bold, abstract compositions, Carly approaches each canvas with a sense of spontaneity and intuition. Her process often begins with a single hue, which then unfolds into a dynamic interplay of forms and colors. Through layering and blending, she allows the colors to interact organically, creating a rhythmic flow that evokes a powerful emotional response. Carly’s use of color is not just an aesthetic choice but a tool for conveying mood, energy, and the ephemeral nature of experience.

The exhibition will be on view through April 1, 2025.
